[ WEEK TWO – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial.

The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state --

"Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it."

And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on,

"Bring a snack or somethin' too.

The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks.

"Well, have at it. You've got till nine."

And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck.

Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. They won't be let out of the room until 9PM when voting ends. Every character must vote and the voting post can be found here.

[He's not happy about this but!! Here they are!! At another trial, and if nothing else, he can try to keep it organized. A sigh.]

...Very well then. If we may, let us begin with a summary of everyone's findings, so we know what is relevant to this case.

QUESTION HIGEKIRI

[personal profile] sunnashi 2017-01-28 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ...The good news is he looks well rested and he got a change of clothes. His arm is bandaged up properly with sleeve rolled back to show it, and aside from that, he just has a cut above his eye.

The bad news? His tachi on the table in front of him. It's clean, but you can tell it's clean because it's missing the scabbard. Trial time, you know what to do. ]

CAMERA FINDINGS

[personal profile] ceded 2017-01-28 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Xion finds herself clearing her throat. She still doesn't really ... like speaking, especially not to a big group of people like this, but it was ultimately her call to keep the camera. She needs to share what it is that the three of them saw that night. ]

Hi, everyone. So ... I didn't get a chance to bring this up before the investigation yesterday, but we saw something on the camera on Thursday night.

It was between 11 and midnight... we saw Mr. von Karma leave. He looked sort of upset, and he was holding a note. [ A beat, in which she frowns, but finally continues: ] We saw Higekiri leave next. Although... he didn't have a sword on him. Oh, and they both left through the windows.

[ A breath. ] That's everything.

EXPERIMENTING

[personal profile] feminitis 2017-01-28 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'm not sure how much use this will be, but if everyone doesn't mind, there are a few things I'd like to try. Though we'll have to go by memory since we don't have the body to look at today...

[She spreads out a couple of things in front of her - her sword, which has a piece of cloth tied tightly around her scabbard and a few more pieces of cloth threaded through the handguard and the cloth as a very rudimentary way of peace-bonding it, along with a few jars of jam she snagged from the general store. This is what she's chosen to carry in here instead of snacks for herself, someone please take pity on her in a few hours when she gets hungry.]

I'd like to see if we can roughly recreate the types of wounds he had. I've tied off my sword so we shouldn't be able to hurt anyone, but if we spread this stuff [She nods at the jam] along the scabbard where the edge of the blade would be, we can track where the weapon would have gone if somebody doesn't mind getting their clothes dirty.

...I know this might not tell us much, but we need every bit of information we can get, since most of us weren't there. What I'm most interested in is finding out whether or not it's possible for someone to have not noticed a weapon of the apparent size that was used to kill him, when it came from head on, since it didn't seem from the description of things that he tried to flee or do anything that would have aggravated the wound... which may indicate that he was caught by surprise.

Could I get a volunteer to act as Mister von Karma, please?

This probably won't help, although it looks like we're still in the zone of "things that aren't directly helping" anyway—but who actually even knew the old man? He didn't seem to socialize a whole lot from what I saw.

I mean, I'll admit I spoke to him enough times to know that he was a jerk.

[And yes, he knows how that sounds coming from him.]

[He's mostly chiming in where necessary, but there's something about the evidence that's making him wonder...]

Okay, can we go back to talking about the note for a minute? We know it was addressed to Manfred, but there are some things about the note that don't make sense. If what Xion says is true that the camera showed those two leaving right before our rooms were supposed to lock for the night but after the front doors of the hotel locked, why would that be the only time Manfred could meet someone? Why not during the day? A lot of us are scattered in the day anyway. And the other thing is that whole "take the information for themselves" thing. What kind of information would Manfred have even wanted? Which...I guess is the same as "what information was available."

[...yeah this might not go anywhere but it's something to think about.]

Okay, so just to make sure we're all on the same page here...

[ waving a hand. ]

We've learned from the Sheriff that he can provide a weapon based on an older Western theme, but not anything specific, so he at least wouldn't have just handed Higekiri's sword self to our killer. Our decomposing friend also didn't have a role.

Higekiri was the one to point out that the victim didn't have long to live, because he was scheduled to die back home... but he didn't want to say who told him that. From the way he put it, I don't think it was the victim himself... he's clearly trying to protect someone who he 'cannot let die', but says that someone isn't 'that person'.

What we do know about the murder right now is that Manfred was stabbed in the tailor's, but since we can't stare at his body, we can't say for sure if the sword was the murder weapon or if someone went crazy with a pair of scissors or whatever. Higekiri also got into a fight with someone unknown, and before that, Xion saw our dead friend leave the hotel with a note between eleven and midnight on the camera. She also saw Higekiri leave, but his sword wasn't on him. Like true acrobats, they used the windows to get out.

So right now, we're still trying to figure out what the hell the note found on our dead buddy means.

For the record, Hal says that while it's possible people could work a murder together and share a reward, no one has asked him about this being a thing previously.

[ so: ]

That being the case doesn't make it an impossibility, of course, but it does make it less likely. Just for reference for this, since it was brought up earlier as a possibility.
sunnashi: (oh that's a bad thing)

CONFESSION?

[personal profile] sunnashi 2017-01-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ This is tiring. He didn't expect that at all. He's so tired, and in pain... Not even just his arm. THIS ISN'T FUN GUYS. HE'S NOT GOOD AT FUCKING WITH PEOPLE. ]

You don't have a lot of time left to point fingers. But I can guarantee you that I'm just as responsible.

I tampered with the crime scene. I trashed the tailor. I left my scabbard there. I even tried to find if there was a video camera in the store and fell on my face for trying.

I would have killed him. But someone did it in my place. I'm grateful to them, because they only did it for me because if I did the kill, I would be caught. But yes, I'm also as guilty.

[ ...Mission accomplished?

He's probably in the corner, on the bench/bed/whatever you're supposed to sleep on. Knees drawn, face buried, and muttering something over and over. He'll poke his head up if he has a visitor though. ]
