[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial.

The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state --

"Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it."

And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on,

"Bring a snack or somethin' too.

The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks.

"Well, have at it. You've got till nine."

And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck.

Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. They won't be let out of the room until 9PM when voting ends. Every character must vote and the voting post can be found here.

Yeah? [His hands are idly brushing over the unbandaged parts of Mrs. O'Leary but his eyes are alert all the same.] Suspicion still gives us something to start ruling people out, I figure. If he's innocent, we'll find out soon enough.
moraled: (so damn smooth)

[personal profile] moraled 2017-02-04 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[A simple nod.]

At a point such as this, we must explore every possible venue. We do not have the luxury of mistakes. We have this time--we must use it.
insincerely: ᴍᴀɴɢᴀ. (no really stop trying to ask me out)

He's not big on the whole sleeping thing. [...] Which means neither am I, you know? To be on the safe side.

Human bodies aren't equipped to stay awake for long periods of time.

[she found that out the hard way]

At some point, you'll need to sleep. I'd recommend doing it in a safe place, with a person you trust.
hydrokinetics: (Turn their heads)

[personal profile] hydrokinetics 2017-02-04 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Where do we even start then? [There are three. That's a lot to parse at the moment.]

[personal profile] impulsiveness 2017-02-04 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Then we might want to focus on people who know their way around a sniper rifle.

[Which, uh. Is presumably not a big list.]

Could be why Nui's corpse got melted, too. If the killer doesn't know enough about chemistry, they could have assumed the chemical bath would be enough to obscure the big ol' hole on her forehead.
elemancy: (pic#10956912)

[personal profile] elemancy 2017-02-04 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Nothin' to hide if someone's actually innocent, right?

[these things tend to make themselves clearer when people start talking. it may not be so easy to see who isn't innocent, but the ones who clearly are tend to get ruled out easily enough.

he's doing his best here, he knows how badly they have to get this one right.]

Tarvek is a prince.

[ she shoots an apologetic look over towards wherever he is since it feels #bad revealing someone else's tragic backstory. ]

He said that people stole his kingdom from him and he's trying to get it back. I don't know anything about the other one though.
insincerely: ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ. (aggggh get that mic away from me)

[personal profile] insincerely 2017-02-04 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone asks you for a weapon to commit murder with, do they have to give it back afterwards?
moraled: (Many emotional conflicts here)

[personal profile] moraled 2017-02-04 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[That doesn't really make him feel better.]

So... he shall tell us if we no longer have the chance to make use of it. Pitiful.
elemancy: (pic#11008174)

[personal profile] elemancy 2017-02-04 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Not... really sure how we start figuring that part out, but I guess we gotta try.

[he's not good at this stuff. help, notdad.]
moraled: (nice try russian hackers!!)

[personal profile] moraled 2017-02-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
... Indeed. We cannot afford to be too cautious or wary. We must understand that in the pursuit of the truth, everyone shall come under suspicion. Honesty and certainty shall bring us closer to that truth.
feminitis: (i have to go now)

[personal profile] feminitis 2017-02-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but if a body was being thrown in there to dispose of evidence, I'd imagine whoever did it might want to linger for some time to be sure nothing interfered with that.

He would have a significantly easier time doing so than anyone else here.

[Poor Tarvek doesn't seem to be bothered by the insinuation. He understands the need to suspect him. Tarvek doesn't suspect Xion at all, though.]

It'd have been easier for me to destroy the camera and get rid of the pieces the next day than steal it and put it away in the jail.

[Why to steal it? Why to leave it intact, was it Sheriff property or something?]

[sighs!!]

You two are going to pass out from exhaustion.

[but she's satisfied with their responses]

Well, I know that Barnham has an alibi. He and Lust confirmed it for each other.

[which!! leaves Tarvek and Eliot]

[personal profile] glaring 2017-02-04 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What about yourself? I'm not sure that I know anyone I'd peg for being suspicious, in this case.

[ Really... it's kind of a pain. This week, everyone seemed fairly normal. ]

[ This she takes with no protest, actually. She's thirsty and hungry and tired from very poorly taking care of herself since, like, Thursday, honestly.

Don't you make her sit down Jason Todd she'll fight you ]

... but does something like that really just happen? Or does someone make it happen?
hydrokinetics: (Not anymore)

[personal profile] hydrokinetics 2017-02-04 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. It won't be like last week where Higekiri was flaunting he was partially responsible, but hopefully this will be pretty easy.

[It won't. The fact that he's shifting in his seat to pull his dog closer says he knows it won't.] Let's start thinking of questions to ask around. That'll help.
insincerely: ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ. (whatever liezel you loser)

[personal profile] insincerely 2017-02-04 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Mr. Spencer was pretty unhappy about Mr. Sheriff giving everyone guns on the first day and wary about how things could go wrong. He also seemed pissed off about the idea of "kids" getting involved in all this.

[He shrugs.]

Of course, all of that could amount to crap.
thatsthespirit: (pic#10763723)

[personal profile] thatsthespirit 2017-02-04 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say we could just ask people if they're familiar with one, but someone could easily lie.

[people could lie about alibis too, but you know]

. . . I'm afraid I don't know anything about this "chemical bath," but does it dissolve bones as well as flesh. . .?
hydrokinetics: (I ain't really sleep well)

[personal profile] hydrokinetics 2017-02-04 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[He doesn't even realize he was holding his breath before there's a sigh of relief.]

Thank you, Milla. So just the other two then. Let's put our focus there for now.
insincerely: ᴍᴀɴɢᴀ. (oh you think i care)

[personal profile] insincerely 2017-02-04 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It also seems pretty stupid to dispose of corpses in a way that would be ideal for you and you alone.

Then again, I'm not discounting the possibility of Ash being stupid.
