[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. Oh-- no. He implied that he would tell us soon enough for us to make use of it. But I don't know how far into the trial we have to get for that to happen.

Of course I can't say what he was doing that night because I wasn't in our room but... during the nights we did sleep there together, he did nothing to arouse my suspicions. ...I trust him.

Papika says he's a prince. He told me that the Sheriff took away his ability to create technology.

Solve a trial properly without the use of evidence, I'll give you your evidence.

Not sure how many people are going to go running in to interfere with a skin-melting pit of chemicals, though.

[that's kind of a death sentence on its own, isn't it?]

Nah. They can if they want but it ain't a hard rule.

What abour Riku? Do you think Nui was responsible for that one too, or was it a different person?

[What's for sure is that Nui didn't shot herself and fall into the acid pit, that's for sure]

Damn it, that sucks for all of us. [LET'S JUST HAVE RANDOM MURDERERS RUNNING AROUND WITH EXTRA WEAPONS.] But all right, got it.

Not necessarily. Perhaps the Sheriff didn't let you destroy it. Or, perhaps, you knew it'd be easier and then decided to take the more difficult route to purposefully throw off suspicion.

So possibly bandits that were a little too bloodthirsty, or someone who really wanted to get a message across. And I don't know. I've had enough arguments about what people will do when they're desperate. It would depend what the Sheriff would reward them.

[ There's .... a pause. A long one. And then: ]

I'm really sorry about your cat. [ It's softly said, and she can't meet his eyes, but it's genuine. ]

So no one can confirm that, since my roommate's Seizaburo.

[Who was obviously not there, so. You know.]

I'm not sure if I'd say stupid, but... Mister Ash has never seemed to care about any of our opinions.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, in theory, but it could lead him to take actions that don't quite make sense to someone who does care what others think.

[sating]

[ He nods ]

It's certainly a possibility, though it's difficult to know with certainty. After all, we don't understand very much at all about how our murderers are meant to kill. What rules they must follow.

I can't say for certain, since I didn't investigate Riku's room.

[but from the description Xion gave?]

It's possible. Perhaps she killed both Riku and Annabeth? That brings up the potential for Nui's killing to be motivated by revenge.

Tarvek is apparently from a world where mad scientists are super common, and Eliot told me he once rigged an election to remove a corrupt leader from a country.

[A pause, like she's thinking of something, but she shrugs.]

I've spoken to both of them briefly at different times but not enough to have a real guess what they're like. Out of the three of you, you're the one I know the best. It's...why I trust that you wouldn't even think of doing something like this.

One doesn't simply conveniently fall asleep like that. The Sheriff must have some way to induce sleep on the people he needs.

In which case, if the method used to keep Jason and Annabeth asleep feels the same than what happened to use, either the culprit had access to the Sheriff's techniques, or the Sheriff knocked us out.

Jason, do you remember how you felt when you woke up in the stocks? Any dizziness, or strange sensations?

I would if I thought I'd be able to salvage something that might help us with the trial.
