[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. Then maybe someone gave her a good reason. That, or she didn't do it and the real killer was banking on us assuming she did.

We should find that out from her first before we get much further.

Currently? I'm a member of a specialized crew. Grifters, thieves... Technically speaking, we're conmen. We take on clients that have been hurt by powerful people, and we strike back at them. Get our clients back whatever was taken from 'em. The stuff on my poster was all involved in one of our cons. Tends to be more borrowing than stealing.

I'm what you'd call the hitter. I deal with anything violent that needs to go down.

Could be any number of things. She didn't really seem like the law-abiding type.

[ But she thinks about that more seriously ]

...To start with, "please don't kill in the hotel" is in there.

It seems like the Sheriff is the one that set up the bath, so our killer didn't necessarily have to know that. More likely they saw a convenient way to dispose of the corpse and took it.

She certainly broke that rule, but is it one worth being killed for?

There's a difference, though. Probably easier for some people to risk other lives over their own, especially if their own is the one at stake.

[this isn't really in defense of anyone either, it's just a general point. when cornered, he knows there are a lot of people who'd probably be more willing to kill to save their own skin. which... is pretty different than recklessly sticking your hand or body in chemicals that are going to kill you.]

We'd have to know there was somethin' to salvage too, anyway. If they just dumped a body in there... we were gonna figure that part out anyway. [and they don't really know if there's any evidence that was lost to that pit, do they? it seems plausible—but noct's not sure because they don't have enough answers.]

Still just feels too vague right now.

It's possible, but that feels like the kind of thing he'd announce, like when he killed Sakyou for not voting.

In any case, I'll try asking him. If he gives us a definite no, then we can cross that out.

That almost sounds more likely. Everybody knows Nui was insane. And she probably wouldn't have been able to really keep quiet about her plans either.

Exactly. The more time we spend trying to figure out if she killed Annabeth and Riku, the less time we spend discussing who else could be behind all of this.

It's nothing more than a pocket clock I modified. I don't have any emotional attachment to it.

I think someone did that to us, Jason. Maybe it's someone with a role. But I don't think it was the Sheriff.

Right. Question. Is there any way we can...I don't know, compare the bullet wounds from the skull to the bullets from the rifle? Can we fish those bones out?

Dunno. "Don't kill without consulting the Sheriff" might be, though.

[ceded]

[ A ... look comes over her face. Rather, her expression completely shutters. ]

No. They spoke, though. Riku ... told me.

Just to make sure: you're not being a shit who actually killed Nui for breaking a rule or whatever and just isn't telling us?

[ceded]

[ A slow nod. ]

It could have been anyone.

At least, anyone who was out that night.

There's no use worrying about it now. Let's instead look ahead. When we catch our culprit, let's be certain to ask these questions then.
