[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. I know Eliot enough to claim 'well, in this circumstance. He's a logical man, intelligent, capable, bothered by the circumstances...he's not cold blooded or particularly violent. Even his crimes aren't violent crimes, he's a thief.

[Eliot is one of the people here that she actually likes.]

Yeah. Sorta. Pretty sure it came and startled her. Dropped the gun. Thing ran off with it. It's probably eaten but mostly irrelevant.

[ She abruptly shuts up, hunching her shoulders. She's visibly upset, and also visibly struggling to contain the feeling. ]

I don't tell just anyone, [ Xion whispers, wounded. Her frown is small and severe. ] It's ... it's hard. But you still should have asked me if it was something you really wanted to know, instead of going behind my back.

Fine. Let's go back to the trial. But we still need to talk.

[SUDDENLY SHE HAS ANOTHER QUESTION 'cause something crossed her mind]

Sheriff, what was the bear trap for?

Last week, the camera was used to throw us off the scent of the real murderer. Was the bear trap supposed to play a part in this week's killing?

[His voice lowers to a whisper, but he accents it more with movements of his hands. God forbid the Sheriff overhear, but...]

I'm trying to get us a way home, dude. It's a long shot, but I-- I come from a place where, uh. I have some experience with time travel. [Some bad experiences.] Judging from our very different circumstances, I guess it's possible that someone drugged us all and put us on that train, but it's more likely that we were each put through a dimensional rift of some sort and transported to another world-line.

[SIGH.] I was going to ask if anyone could help me figure this out - tomorrow, after the execution, after he left.

[ a pause... then he quirks an eyebrow, gesturing towards Barnham. ]

You're right. I wouldn't kill like that. But if those wanted posters have any truth to them, I know someone who would.

There is no scenario for murder. It's all murder. Killing anyone is wrong, and you're just as much of a murderer as they are if you believe that.

[To his credit he does look sorry. Maybe talking to her directly would have been better, not that he'd have told her how he obtained the information, though]

[...that would make sense if it wasn't Annabeth and he didn't think everything about her was #barbarianprincessstatus but...he knew she was wearing down from the game. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise if she wasn't expecting coyotes.]

Hopefully it chokes. [And with that he'll just walk off and be distressed because holy shit.]

We didn't see anything like that, though I won't discount the possibility that we missed it. Not like any of us wanted to get close and personal with a pool of acid, after all.

Can you tell us the rules around that? How many people? Who can they pick? What's their goal? And, can that person also be a Bandit?

Nope. It's picked and either incorporated or not. Y'all chose not to leave it anywhere it could've had use, therefore it ain't a part of the murder this week.

[ Said softly, and very sincerely. After that, she'll leave him alone and make her way back over to Percy. ]
