[ WEEK THREE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. I don't know then... I wonder if they never got along and they finally had a fight. I didn't know either of them much.

[ but that's all he could think of... Nui and Riku having a squabble, but it ended in Riku's death??? Damn, tfw murderous roommate, huh. ]

Exactly. We all have pistols. If they were being forced to murder, they could have opted for something less painful. But immolating someone is just sick.

[Prayer circle for the killer, tbh. They're going to need it.]

The gunshot was heard from the bonfire, saloon and train station area, while it seems the victim died near the bonfire and restaurant. If the weapon can shoot from a distance, then the killer could have been stationed any of those places.

[ Will's ears are pink but he sure looks unhappy.

Exactly. We found the rifle and the headshot wound, but there could have been something else. The fact that you found parts of her clothes burned is suspicious, too. If they had the bonfire going, why not just toss her in there?

Riku was staying mostly out at the homestead. He was rarely at the hotel.

He kept to himself a lot, but Nui was probably part of the reason why. Besides, Nui was crazy.

[ she sure has pivoted on her "just because people are bad doesn't mean you can accuse them" position of last week ]

This probably isn't very important to this trial, but there are more of those spooky people inside the train than there were before.

[ SHE JUST THOUGHT. people might want to know. ]

Who was your roommate?

[ That produces a pause.

Hold that thought, Natalie. Xion is going to go ask the Sheriff something. ]

I was also in my room, but as my roommate was... out, I don't have an alibi.

[ She's roommates with Annabeth. She shrugs. ]

That's gonna be more and more the case as more of us get cut down.

Exactly. Someone in this room is at least partially if not entirely guilty for what happened and if they walk away, the chances of this getting even worse spikes even higher. I'm not letting that happen. Let's start tackling evidence one piece at a time.

...I'm glad that she did. Even if she hadn't pulled you away... I'm not sure you would have found us. But I think you would have found something much worse.

But at least on the bright side (?) he's probably going to abscond from this conversation for a while to just sit near Will. And he does at least lean over to say a quiet: ]

I'm sorry about that. Though your bluntness did start it.

[ Because he is flustered about this too, okay... But he's at least hoping that his calm otherwise can be a balance for Will, hence staying near him for a while. ]
