[ WEEK FOUR – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. The rock... could have been rolled to the end of the dock, presumably, but in the end someone had to have had enough strength to carry or roll it. Likewise, I find it doubtful that someone who has been bodily harmed by this place to have done it.

[Sei studies Hannibal for a moment or two, then shakes her head. Nah... why would he ever butcher a human?

You're also not the kind of person who would kill someone as cruelly as this... [Or at all?? He saves lives, he doesn't end them?? Just let her live in willful ignorance.] ...but then, most of us left don't seem the type either...

Provided no one's going to run off with my phone afterwards, then sure, I don't mind lending it for a few minutes.

Would it matter if they were both dead before they got there? Probably not much of a stretch if they've got all night to drag a couple of bodies out there.

Could've been that they were both in one piece until they got out there. Make it look like two different things happened, or something.

And yet we've never once managed to do it, except the first time...! We're all relatively capable people, so why...?!

...well, with any luck we'll get it right this time. We just have to keep trying!

But I barely talked to either of them, so I don't know. Is there someone here who would have a better idea of what they had in common?

If there was something else, then it had to be covered up super super well.

[He wrinkles his nose.] We have all night, okay, but then it becomes who would be able to not only drag two bodies for that far of a walk but also do it in the dark while messing with the scene? It probably takes a different kind of skill, right?

[Rest, what's that, can you eat it?]

[Okay, she's just going to make a mental note to pick up some extra paper and writing implements from the general store next time she's there so she can be prepared.]

...I could see that being the case too. It's not like we've had much luck figuring things out, so it makes sense that as time goes on whoever is doing the killing would see little need to be subtle.

[HUFFS]

Well, that's their mistake. We're going to get it right this time!

No evidence. Limited time. Too much pressure. You're not set up to win here, and it's on purpose.

They're picked together. Teamwork's easier than flying solo, too. So unless the Sheriff says otherwise, we might as well assume it was 2 bandits.

I really hope that's not the case, but you may be right...! Ugh, I hope there's no one like that among us...

[Mostly because the number of outwardly creepy people is rapidly dwindling and if it turns out whoever it is is a good actor that presents a whole new set of problems...]

Two people working together. Probably wouldn't be that hard if they're strong enough.

[people do crazy things for murder in this town.] It's a pretty big window, you can do a lot with that many hours, even in the dark.

[he's not sure, but:] Seems easier to believe that than the both of them walking out that way on their own. Unless they really had a reason to.

When we were talking about the wanted posters last week, Lust mentioned that she's talked to Eliot on "numerous occasions" or whatever. He might have an idea? And Mr. Barnham was her roommate.

That's true. Or maybe Simon showed up at the wrong place at the wrong time, saw who was cutting Lust and was shot to get him out of the way.

[ Disabled club! Chane will conscript whoever is standing closest to her to do just that, should the need arise. ]
