TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. I think it's important to note that we have confirmation of Lust being drugged, and in that case, along with the evidence of her being dismembered, we could conclude that our killer is not necessarily strong.

Depending on the method of drugging, it could also be someone she trusted. Or at least someone who didn't appear to be threatening, as you have said.

It would be easier if we knew the kind of drug, but I doubt we'll be given that kind of information.

The only way to really confirm would be to check the clinic and see if anything noticeable is missing. I don't know if that's possible.

If we flop around uselessly again this week, the Sheriff might take pity on us and give us a clue. He seems to have a knack for injecting twists and excitement in our suffering.

[ Nodding to himself. ]

In the meantime, let's list all the ways of drugging that are plausible in a case like this.

If she was drugged, it may also be safe to assume our killer has special knowledge on how certain medications affect the human body. Right?

That's right, though I think basic medical knowledge will tell you taking too much of anything will usually result in death, for someone to be precise they'd need at least some experience.

At any rate, perhaps we should shift our focus to those who know a lot about medicine.

Indeed. And Doctor Lecter has confirmed that such drugs could be easily obtained. It seems that has widened the possible pool of suspects for Lust's murder, if nothing else.

Russell had needlemarks, and he admitted to using medicine to help himself sleep. I don't bring this up as an accusation, but only to point out that he does know how to use the drugs we have available to incapacitate someone, even if it's himself in this case.

That would mean he'd know the right amounts to dose someone so that they'd simply sleep, or so that they'd never wake up.

At least the former, yes. For the latter, it would only be a matter of "more."

Well, if we're not accusing him, then we can just take that as "a hell lot of people could've known how to use the drugs".

Perhaps. It at least makes it a bit clearer that people we might not expect to have knowledge may. It would not have come up for Russell otherwise, after all.

I place I was at before... They forced me to inject myself with medicine to sleep. . . So it's one of the only ways that can help me sleep when I have trouble.

I don't think this proves anything either way, but if we're looking for people who would need to drug her in order to overpower her... He's kind of a shrimp.

Mm, I agree. What I don't understand is why the dismembering was needed—if they wanted to kill her but couldn't do it without her being drugged, they wouldn't have had to go that far.

One possibility I fear I must put forth is that... that may have been the only way for the killer to move her body.

[They'd be working off of the assumption that someone had had to be strong to do it, but...

What if that was why?]

... It is merely a possibility, however.

Up until now, we were assuming that someone would have had to be strong enough to kill her with that much force. Our killer could have used that to make us think to look for only people who fit the bill.

I assume it was to move the body, if our killer couldn't carry her whole weight. But why she'd need to be moved in the first place I do not know.
