[ WEEK SIX – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. Probably not. Guess we should ask how many people we're looking for at this point and try to take it from there.

[gestures towards the Sheriff. she's standing stiffly today, arms crossed, demeanor tense. everyone is tired]

I asked if two murders were Bandit kills, and one was an independent kill. The Sheriff said no, but won't clarify for now.

Because there's only nine of us in here? I can see why.

[ sighing. ]

I didn't look at the clinic.

I did. Percy and I were the one who discovered the scene at the clinic.

Alibis are probably pointless with this many of us. I don't think it's gonna help us this time around. [he doubts stripping will work either, but you know.]

Our usual methods of investigation are all useless here. Alibis, and strip searches. We have the bodies, but--

Maybe he'll make us wait until there are 10 minutes left this time.

Perhaps, but we should focus on what we can in the meantime. I'll keep an eye on him and raise the question again after we've had some time to discuss our situation.

Xion was shot once. Point blank. Shinnosuke obviously wasn't.
We should try to figure out why.

If they were killed by the same person, the tally we took on who could use a gun before won't matter. I would assume that anyone could manage to kill someone else point blank, even if they were inexperienced.

[ or it was still done by a noob anyway, ugh. ]

Perhaps. However, would it be likely for such a... point-blank shot to be done after she had seen Mister Shinnosuke killed before her? That seems quite unlikely.

[Xion was trusting but...not that trusting.]

Could also start with the fact that the scene of our crimes all seem to be in one central location closer to the hotel. Whoever was behind the murders didn't want to stray too far from "home", apparently.

Maybe they didn't have much of a choice, or everyone just happened to be close. The way it looks...

Could also imply that it was someone who wasn't strong enough to move the bodies either and just...left them there. [Which is super fucked up? That is amazingly fucked up.] You're right. It's hard to say

Could be that too. There aren't that many of us left that wouldn't be able to do that, though.

Though I loathe to offer up the possibility... could it be that they wished for the crimes to be found?

But why would they want that? [It's possible but. Why.]

Maybe they didn't want us to waste time looking.

[ because they may be murderers but they know how tired everyone is, how nice ]

I fear I do not know. [His brow furrows, frustrated.] It is a scene I have seen before in cases of murder that I have investigated in Labyrinthia, though I fear I could not speak to the killers' thought processes in those times either.

You're overthinking it. Lecter was caught in a trap that was left out in front of the hotel. The other two were most likely going to check the stocks and were waylaid.

[ ash doesn't know why he's even interjecting at this point... he's going to be stuck here for hours, might as well not be completely bored?! ]

If you actually want to accomplish something, you should consider who might have wanted to kill those people and why. The rest is superfluous trivia.

Well okay. [He rubs at his face.] If somebody targeted Xion and Shinnosuke together, they probably thought they'd be an easy kill. Shinnosuke was blind and Xion was small. More than likely they weren't expecting them to put up a fight, so...maybe somebody who didn't know them that well?

But who wouldn't know them that well? In a group this small, that could narrow it down a LOT.

Or they targeted them because they suspected that they had roles, and they were partially correct. We don't know the Bandits' intentions, but I suspect they're trying to kill all of us before the Deputy and Bounties can kill one another. It would be in their favor to target people that have roles.
