It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.

... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!

After all, there's nothing wrong with the town today and you might just want to savor it while it lasts.

[A lot of them, really. Seeing in the dark, turning into a 6'4" dude when he takes his blindfold off, summoning portals of darkness to take him from place to place...

But Riku decides to go with a simpler one. He takes Soul Eater from the sheath he's fashioned for it over his back, holding it out for Tarvek to see.]

Well, for one thing, I shouldn't have to carry this around. Back home I could summon it to my hand.

[That's one strange sword, Tarvek thinks. Cool, but strange]

Is that something you could always do or does some sort of object or magic give you that power?

[He's getting increasingly worried, even though he's trying to hide it]

I couldn't always do it, but once I gained the ability to, it's like it's a part of me. No special object or magic spells needed.

[Unless the blade itself counts as a special object? That might be the case. He's not entirely sure. It's not a Keyblade--that would be a special object for sure.]

I'm guessing this sounds like something you've been experiencing.

[Tarvek gestures with his hands, wondering how exactly he can explain how it feels to be a spark]

I have this...genetic condition that allows me to be excellent with cla--machines and robots. Since I arrived here I'm having a hard time focusing, I can't even dismantle the piano in the saloon.

[And that usually should have been something he could do with his eyes closed, so to say]

It's not the kind of thing someone can just "remove".

[Ahhh. Ahhhhhhhhh. Riku gives a small, voiced huff of air, a cross between a "heh" and a "tch." He feels.]

I know the feeling. One of the things I'm missing... I should be able to feel its presence here in my heart.

[His free hand comes up to his chest, curling in a loose grip just over his heart. He can't feel the darkness there any more.]

[Tarvek takes off his glasses, mulling the situation]

I have theorized it may be an effect of the world itself. Once we return to our homes, our powers and skills should return.

Will you be okay until then?

[He's kinda taking the 'presence in my heart' part a tad too literally. Don't die from a cardiac arrest anytime soon, Riku]

So you think it's not whatever brought us here that locked our powers away, but this place itself.

[That's actually an interesting idea. Riku frowns slightly as he returns Soul Eater to its sheath, mulling the idea over.]

I'll be fine. It's actually kind of a relief.

[Even though it's a reprieve he doesn't feel he deserves.]

Exactly! That Sheriff hinted it's possible to return home, the technology used to bring us should be able to send us back. The problem is finding the way to reach it without the loss of many lives.

[Chances are there'll be three or four murders before they progress in any way, he thinks. A bit of an optimistic thought]

A relief?

It's a... long story.

[And not one he really wants to relive. Sorry, Tarvek.]

That's not a bad idea. But if it's the world itself that locks our abilities away, then what was it that brought us here in the first place? That must have taken a lot of power.

A portal, perhaps? My roommate once mentioned something called 'dark corridor', think of it like that, like a path that connects worlds together.

[Anyone can understand a corridor, not everyone may understand a portal]

The Sheriff's people may have some machine that can create a portal.

[If Tarvek's looking at Riku, he might be able to see the shock that crosses his face at the mention of dark corridors. There's only one other person here who he thinks might know about them, and Tarvek has just confirmed that she has something to do with Organization XIII.]

Dark corridors? Who's your roommate? Does she wear a coat like mine?

[Excuse him. He'll come back to the portal machine in a moment.]

[Tarvek looks aside. Part of him had noted the similarity between Xion's coat and Riku's coat -- especially because she said 'It's what my uniform protects me from' -- so there was little chance their choice in wardrobe was a coincidence.

Another part of him hopes he didn't get Xion in trouble]

Her name is Xion, and she has a coat just like yours. Do you know her?

He's seen her name on the wanted posters around town, but it's a whole different ball game to hear it said aloud. Riku's quiet a moment, letting the pieces fit themselves into place.]

You could say that.

[Xion has all the characteristics of a member of Organization XIII. She wears their uniform, and is familiar with the corridors of darkness. Roxas was fighting with two Keyblades when he saw him last, and there was that jolt when he touched Oblivion...

And a girl's voice, crying out to him. Immediately after he'd been hit by Oblivion...]

She and I were... working toward the same thing.

[He thinks. But hell if he's going to admit that he doesn't remember her, either. Something screwy's going on here, and he's going to get to the bottom of it.]

What makes you think the Sheriff's people need a machine to create a portal?

[Knowing Xion, whatever these two were working towards to was likely to be positive. Tarvek smiles for a moment before going back to the other topic]

I'm not sure about this, but wouldn't it be very tiring to bring people from thirty-nine different worlds, if a person with that power did it? It'd be easier if there was a machine.

It's not exactly thirty-nine different worlds, but I see your point.

[How many of them come from the same worlds? He's seen a number of people that seem to have connections with the others here. How many unique worlds are represented when all is said and done?

But that's not the important part right now. Riku frowns.]

If you believe what the Sheriff said about his employers being omniscient, it wouldn't be that hard at all.
