It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.

... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!

After all, there's nothing wrong with the town today and you might just want to savor it while it lasts.

You know that and I know that but do you really think people are going to remember that when something really hurts them? [He knows from watching other people, man, this isn't the kind of thing you mess with.]

Probably not.

[That's why it's a plan that will probably work.]

But you can't stop people from making the wrong choices. All you can do is try and guide them in the right direction.

Unfortunately we already know there are people here that are willing to play the Sheriff's game.

Isn't guiding them kind of like stopping them from making the wrong choice in the first place? [He doesn't think too much of it either, really.] Maybe we should make a list to tack up with the wanted posters. A list of names of the people most likely to fire the first shot.

Yeah. It is.

[But if you can prevent them from making the wrong choice in the first place, then you won't have to fight with them later on to force their hand. Riku doesn't have too much hope in that working out, here.]

That'd be a good idea. There are about forty of us by my count, so if we could narrow it down...

[Riku pulls his copy of the Sheriff's rulebook out of his coat. He's been using it to make notes here and there on the town--starting a list of potential murderers is probably an even better use for it. He'll just start copying names down from the wanted posters around them...]

I don't think we can just use the posters though. If we write down everybody that's wanted for murder, that'll be half the town already.

[Not to mention, they don't exactly seem reliable.]

Forty people is a lot to work with. [He's watching Riku and not bothering to help since writing and reading aren't exactly his forte, but he's still scanning the posters carefully.] We can easily start a list based on the posters and then start talking to people we're suspicious of. Mark them off as they prove themselves or add new names if there's reason to believe they should be on there. It's going to take time we don't exactly have, but it's better than being caught by surprise later.

[He's getting really tired of being caught off-guard mostly.]

[Do you see that slight smirk curling at Riku's lips, Percy? Because in spite of how serious he is here, Riku's smirking a little bit as he gestures toward Percy's wanted poster.]

So I should keep you on the list of suspects.

[Joking also takes time they don't exactly have. But when it's presented to him on a silver platter like that...]

Yeah, maybe. [He says it casually enough that it might be hard for Riku to tell he's joking, but Percy's pretty used to people accusing him of stuff anyway.] I don't really plan on killing anybody to win though.

[Whether he's joking or not, he's still here now talking 6560 16

Interesting.

Maybe Percy isn't planning on killing anybody right now, but Riku's not willing to write anybody off. There's got to be something that would convince him to kill, right?

But for right now, he takes him at his word.

After a moment, Riku's got a list of names, stars placed next to anyone that has "murder" written on their posters.]

Looks like we've got our work cut out for us. We've got sixteen people who have murder on their wanted posters alone.

So almost half and probably half of those have interesting circumstances behind them. [He knows he and Annabeth do, but he says nothing and his face betrays nothing.] Any ideas of how to ask about the murders without interrogating people?

Maybe we don't need to. How many people would admit to it when they know that's what we've been brought here to do?

If we can talk to them, we should be able to get an idea of what sort of person they are. That'd be a good place to start.

Not many, unless they were proud of it. [Just a thought.] Sixteen people is a lot of people to talk to, but it's not unreasonable. It probably depends on how fast we can do it, too.
