[ WEEK ONE – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. She killed the girl. Earned a night with you. She did not get away with it. Does not earn the night with you. So, to the jail cell to wait for her execution.

Please, Mister Sheriff! If it has to be like this, at least let her be comfortable! She told the truth, that's worth something, isn't it?! Please!

Nope, confessions actually are a point against ya. You put in the work but then take away the ability for the other players to figure it out? You take away their way of earning their keep? If this was part of the actual game, Tiara would be punished.

[cherrypuncher]

But it isn't part of the game, so she doesn't have to be punished, so please just let her stay somewhere comfortable tonight!

[sheriffexe]

[ Sighs. ]

Miss Yuki, the answer is no.

What do I have to do so you'll compromise and say yes?! Please, Mister Sheriff, she's already spent all week in that cell, it's not fair!

Can someone at least stay with her in the cell? There's no rule against that, is there?

[sheriffexe]

In the cell next to her, sure. That's fine.

[robitussin]

Fine. Then I'll do it.

[sheriffexe]

Alright. I'll be locking you in till morning, you know.

[robitussin]

Whatever. I don't care, it doesn't matter.

[cherrypuncher]

N-Natalie...!

[AAAAAAAAA FRIEND......]

What?

[It's not like!! She cares!!]

[SHE CAAAAAAARES]

I'm going to keep you two company, too, and I'll bring you both whatever you want, okay?

I don't want anything.

[A slow sigh.]

Willing to bet she does even if she doesn't admit it, though. Just focus on her.

[He doesn't say anything, but he does catch her eye and gives her a look that's meant to convey a "thank you" and a "be careful."]

[Silent thumbs up. She's got this, even if everything is horrible.]

[She pauses, uncertain how to react, before giving a small nod of acknowledgement in return.]

[ ALSO TEARFUL SORRY ]

... thank you.

There is literally nothing to thank me for.

[She's fairly certain there are numerous other people who would have done it, too.]

... it's ... it's really kind of you. To do this. Even if I can't thank you, then ... it still means a lot to me.

[robitussin]

It's not kind. It's just - decent.

[If she were in the same situation, being completely alone would be worse than anything.]

It's hardly a matter of her "earning" it. If she truly is going to die tomorrow, then she should spend her last night in the comfort of those who care about her.

That is human decency, is it not?
