[ WEEK TWO – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. We could ask everyone to provide a sample, but anyone with two brain cells to rub together would think to switch up their own handwriting.

...maybe if we can think of some way to get people to write things down that doesn't seem like we're fishing for a sample?

[But she sighs, because she knows even as she says it that it's unlikely. With the note having been found, period, someone cunning enough to go for a kill would know not to write anything down carelessly.]

Maybe if we looked at pre-existing samples, but we'd need to be able to leave this building to go fetch those — if they exist at all.

[The Sheriff isn't going to let them check each person's voting slip, either, so.]

... I don't think Chane would mind letting us compare what she's written so far, though. That'll help us take one person off our list, at least.

I don't think she'd mind either! She's been very cooperative today.

[Also, Sei doesn't think Chane would have killed Manfred... she might have the skill, but. Sei thinks she's super cool. And super cool people wouldn't do that.

[ ... Yeah, she'll just pull her notebook out of her pocket and hand it over -- to Sei or Jason, whomever's closest. Her writing is fluid and precise, a calligraphic cursive so neat it looks almost alien.

Enough with this fanclub nonsense, though. ]

[He looks at her handwriting for a second before shaking his head, and returning the notebook to her.]

Figured as much. You're good to go, Chane.

[ Hey Sei, have Higekiri's rulebook, open to to a page. He's writes in the back, so there's something. He might have... gently thrown it towards them when he overheard their conversation.

Writing with a pencil is different, but his handwriting's that border between "readable" and "buddy, lift your pencil so letters don't look stuck together". ]

...well, your handwriting doesn't look like the note's handwriting, so there's that, at least...

The Hero Club must have a few samples of handwriting. That could be of help, whether it's to eliminate suspects or, if we're lucky, catch them.

[In that case, we have to rely on Yuna to help us with this. Wait until the second half of the trial, please!]

Would Yuna have those documents on her, though? Not really sure the Sheriff's going to let us step out all willy nilly just because we said please and thank you.

[But, YEAH. If they can go this route it'll come later.]

Don't understimate the leader of the Hero Club!

[ Perking up at "Hero club", Russell can make it a little easier for them... Since he always tends to have his diary on him... ((Also I have to leave in like an hour or two))

So he'll flip to a random page in his book and write down a few random things that pop into his head: "Hero club, Yuna, Tabasa, Cody, Kantera, Dogma, Gardenia".... ... ... Then show it. ]

I never wrote a note to that old man, but this is my handwriting anyway, if we still need to prove ourselves...

[THE MURDER GODS HAVE SPOKEN and Russell is in the clear, so Jason looks over his handwriting before shaking his head.]
