[ WEEK TWO – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. This probably won't help, although it looks like we're still in the zone of "things that aren't directly helping" anyway—but who actually even knew the old man? He didn't seem to socialize a whole lot from what I saw.

I mean, I'll admit I spoke to him enough times to know that he was a jerk.

[And yes, he knows how that sounds coming from him.]

I cannot say I know much about him either.

[A sigh.]

His name was Manfred von Karma, and he was an enforcer of the law. [and had an even worse stick up his ass than Barnham.] That is all I know, aside from his arrogance, which was a clear trait.

He was also willing to listen, at least once one made clear there was something important he needed to know.

It's not surprising he followed the note, but what I find odd is the possibility he went unarmed. He wasn't a trusting guy.

Arrogant and an enforcer of the law?

[WELL then. She's. Not-so-subtly glancing in Nui and Ash's directions... she's so transparent in her suspicions.]

He might have made the wrong person angry, and that person might have taken the opportunity to be rid of him because they thought he'd get in the way of their fun if he was allowed to be present at these trials.

I spoke to him once, right after we got off the train. But that was it.

Didn't invite him for a drink?

Didn't talk to him much, either. Just thought he was... kind of full of himself.

[He sighs.]

That doesn't justify his murder, though. I wonder if anyone knew him more personally.

I never spoke to him, personally. The only things I know about him are what was listed on his wanted poster.

I drew a picture of Cocona for him! He said [ this is the worst impression of von karma ever ] "I see" when I showed him it.

... How informative. Let's make a note of that: "not rude enough to rip up pictures in front of people."

I wonder if he was attacked because a lot of people didn't know him that well... Which would make it harder for us to find out who hurt him...

... you mean like, it'd be harder to figure out a motive? Since if no one knew him really well, why would they want to kill him?

That's a possibility. Of course, it would also make sense to kill the person you know best, as some might refuse to believe that you could do such a thing, so both ends of the argument work here.

Or what if he was killed because of the "role" he played in this game? That's similar to how it happened last week, isn't it?

I spoke to him once and he said something about bringing justice, prosecuting murderers and the like.

His wanted poster says he's a criminal lawyer, so that makes sense. Probably a prosecutor, then.

I didn't know him personally, only observed him in group settings. I wonder if it's worth noting that the first of us to die was likely the most useful of us in determining a killer's identity.

Never talked to the guy. I know what's on his poster and I saw him around, but that's about it. Can't say he seemed like the approachable type.

That's what it means to have the "death penalty" on you, right?

I wonder how he felt about that... Going to die anyway even if he managed to get out of this place... Doesn't seem like there's really a point.

Watson, are you saying that the note could be a setup? Like it was something that was only written after the murder to throw us all off? I gotta say you're smarter than you give yourself credit for.
