[ WEEK TWO – TRIAL ]

TRIAL

In the morning, the town comes back to life. Birds crow overhead, a snake nearby hisses, a lingering coyote dips behind a shop before disappearing into the wild. It's a frightening contrast to the stillness of yesterday but it doesn't mean it's over yet. After all, today is the trial. The Sheriff stands on the porch of the Town Hall and brings his hand up to his mouth to let out a whistle. He'll thumb back to the Hall behind him and very clearly state -- "Trial time, folks. Get in here and figure out who did it." And then he'll turn to leave before pausing and adding on, "Bring a snack or somethin' too. The Town Hall is set up more like a court house, a Judge's bench at the front but instead of at center, it's off to the side as if more for observation than participation. There's a table at the front of the room already holding a small box and a pad of papers and pen, for voting apparently. A side room containing only a metal gurney is next and today it's obvious why there's a gurney there at all with the corpse, resting right on top of it. Aside from that, there are rows for everyone to take a seat and it's only after everyone is inside and settled, that the doors close and the Sheriff speaks. "Well, have at it. You've got till nine." And then, he points to a clock on the wall that reads 12:00. Good luck. Welcome to the trial post! Characters are free to discuss everything related to the trial here. Or the culprit who stole Higekiri's sword knew about the camera and purposefully avoided it.

It's unlikely there was anyone who didn't know about the camera. Not only we had a meeting about it, it's also the kind of information anyone would tell those who weren't at the meeting.

Right. Which doesn't exactly help us narrow down the list of possible scenarios.

Yes, that was my thought. Someone who knows enough to avoid being detected, who can move about without drawing attention or being seen. While carrying a noticeable weapon - swords aren't small things, easily tucked into a pocket.

And who do you think is capable of such movement? Or do you not have anyone specific in mind?

In all fairness, I'd wager that a number of us might be capable of such, myself included. It's an easy thing to hide, or lie about. But no, I'm not about to point any specific fingers. It's simply more criteria to perhaps narrow the suspects down, I suppose.

Fair enough.

But even discussing that possibility doesn't bring anymore suspects into the light. All we have is the evidence against Higekiri, nothing more and nothing less.

And Higekiri's story about his stolen sword is...convenient and questionable.

Of course, there's still his mystery assailant.

We have far too many unanswered questions, and someone who isn't willing to work with us to shed light on the truth. Even when his own neck is on the chopping block.

If he refuses to cooperate because he wishes to die to protect someone else, then that's his decision. I won't lose sleep over it.

Neither will I. If he doesn't care enough about his own life, why in the world should I? We've done our duty to the extent we can, unless someone offers a last minute confession....

[Lust had already decided that she'd simply put down Higekiri's name if no other suspects could be uncovered. They had to put someone down.]

It will be unfortunate if we don't uncover the correct killer at this trial, but. . . well.

That doesn't mean we can't find them at a later date, to make them see the consequences of their actions. Just as Higekiri will likely see the consequences of his.

It isn't as though this is a real trial, the murderer and victim are simply situational. It's regrettable, of course, but it isn't as though we'd be letting some rabid serial killer loose among us. If the man is willing to die over this, I say that wraps it all up.

[Lust is right. it really is that simple, and ultimately, Milla agrees; otherwise, she wouldn't have brought it up in the first place. but despite her hardened exterior, she can't help but feel a pang of guilt anyway. DAMN IT FEELINGS. . . thanks Jude and co. for teaching her to have these!!]

It's a very unfortunate situation.

But this place seems to breed those.
