It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.
... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!
Except there is, perhaps, a few things amiss.

Well.
Sei hands a knife off to Natalie once she finds one, then ties off her haori by the sleeves and hefts the bundle up over her shoulders. She can't quite make out what Milla's saying from down here, so she surveys their predicament and tries to figure out what to do.
...spotting the flashlight by the corpses, she picks it up and tries to turn it on. Is it working? If so, she's going to see if she can spot exactly how high up the rope is, where it snapped.]

While Chane and Milla talk about getting more rope and Sei fetches the flashlight, she takes her pickaxe in her hand and aims it at the smooth rock towards the bottom of the pit, wondering if she can create some makeshift handholds to get part of the way up.]

On the other hand, Natalie, you really shouldn't have done that! Like, really, because the moment to pickaxe hits the stone -- it shatters. It shouldn't shatter, that doesn't make any logical sense, but it shatters into a bunch of little pieces and the ground underneath her feet will begin to, uh, move.
As in, she's starting to get sucked down into it sort of like quicksand. The skeletons are sucking her in that is.
But haha, that's crazy, right? There's no way that's really happening. ... Right? ]

[She flinches when the stones shatter, reaching forward to pick up one of the shards, before... Ah. That sure is happening. She starts breathing quicker almost automatically, struggling (which is the opposite of helpful) to get out.
Either way, her voice is clearly and understandably panicked when she speaks. Of course sinking into the earth wasn't bad enough, there had to be gross skeletons touching her too??]
No no no no no. Nope. Oh my god. Fuck, okay, you wanna give me a hand? Seriously, I could really use one right now! [Then she looks up towards the top of the hole.] And more rope would be awesome right now!
[In the meantime, she's looking around for anything she might be able to use to pull herself out and away.]

...Horrifying, actually, and even more horrifying is the fact that it seems to be centered on Natalie. Sei nods, then darts over and grabs for her wrist.
She tugs hard, trying to get a firm enough grip to pull her up and out.
(Trying, being the operative word.)]
Shit...!

Chane went to get some new rope! What's happening now?!
no subject
Also, Chane's back now. Hi. ]

[She screams up towards Milla. They can discuss it further when she's not, well, preoccupied.
The tugging is definitely an admirable effort, but despite Sei's help, she's still sliding into the ground, making a noise of distress.]
It's not working, you have to try something else!
[Which, conveniently, is punctuated by the new rope being tossed down. She gives it a surprised look as it comes, but she's... well, stuck. She looks towards Sei.]
Grab it and bring it over, please!

Come on come on come on—

Tell us when and we'll pull!

Except Natalie just keeps sinking and the rope just isn't quite long enough, no. The ground just keeps sucking her in, even quicker the more frantic they all get and then --
Well, and then Natalie is gone.
What will you do now? ]
no subject
Please enjoy the nearly hysterical screams of help me as she goes down??]

Natalie? Natalie! Seizaburo, is she okay?
no subject
[How is this happening. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING.]
I'm going after her! Miss Goodman, hold on...!
[And this idiot lets go of the rope and starts trying to dig down through the skeletons... gross... but she's gotta try something.]
no subject
Or hands, rather, because as Sei digs around in the skeletons, they'll begin sliding too, pulling her down into the ether. Since Chane and Milla so helpfully decided to stay up top, there really isn't anyone down here to stop it, is there?
What a shame.
So, with a loud shifting from the skeletons below, they seem to open up and pull Sei in whole. What's the point of going as a team when you abandon two of your own, ladies? For shame.
And with that, Sei is gone. What now? ]
no subject
Seizaburo, grab the rope and let us pull you up! You can't do much to help her if the skeletons get you too!
[. . . and there's no response]
[Milla lets a moment of silence pass, before she tries again?]
Seizaburo?
[another beat]
[. . .]
[she glances at Chane, brows furrowed. every ounce of her wants to jump into that pit to save Natalie and Sei now, but. . . her logical side prevents her from doing so]
no subject
Natalie was dragged down into... something.
Seizaburo is not answering either.
Chane's hands tense at her sides, fingers itching for a knife to curl around. To feel safe.
And then, with no real warning, she reaches out to take Milla's arm. We're leaving. ]
no subject
No! We can't leave without them.
[she says firmly as she pulls on her arm]
There must be more to the mines than the pit. We need to find them!
no subject
Stronger than she looks by far, Chane resists Milla's tugs, still gripping the other woman's arm. A morose set in her expression gives way to decided determination.
Let's.
Go. ]
no subject
Not yet. [she says firmly] I'm not suggesting we follow them into the skeleton pit, but there's space around and behind the hole. We should, at the very least, examine those areas before we leave.
I refuse to exit this mine without at least trying to search for them.
no subject
See this head shaking? It's super emphatic.
As far as Chane's concerned, there's only so many lives that can be thrown away outside the rules of this "game" before it yields something worse. If Seizaburo and Natalie were granted a quick death, well...
Then that just makes them luckier than some. ]
no subject
Are Natalie and Seizaburo not our comrades? Our allies in escaping this brutal game? We owe it to them to press on, no matter how dangerous the road ahead is. We owe it to everyone here.
[a beat]
Besides, if you drag me out now, I'll simply return later on my own.
[has Chane ever met someone so stubborn??]
no subject
She hardly sees why they owe Sei and Natalie their deaths and, as such ... Well, she finally releases Milla's arm.
Go ahead, woman. Turn away from her. See what it gets you. ]
