It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.
... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!
After all, there's nothing wrong with the town today and you might just want to savor it while it lasts.

[there is smoke coming from the kitchen this morning. it's not like, so much smoke that it seems like something is on fire. but there's enough for any casual passerby to be Concerned]
[investigation of the smoke leads to Milla, who is standing in front of one of the stoves, her brow furrowed and a spatula clutched in one hand. spread across the counter is a variety of spices and seasonings, as well as a few large slabs of raw garula steak. anyone good at cooking can tell that the seasoning Milla chose all compliment each other nicely and would make a very delicious steak! except. . .]
[the steak she has in the pan on the stove is burnt to a crisp]
I see. . . so maintaining the right amount of heat is the most difficult part of cooking. I thought all one needed to know was how to properly combine flavors.

Oh.
Well, then. ]
... [ Reaching out, she taps Milla on the shoulder to get her attention. ]

[then at the burnt steak]
[then Chane again]
[. . .]
I'm sorry, I don't think breakfast is quite ready yet.
[whoops]

And then she's just going to reach over and turn off the oven's temperature knob. ]

[the meat continues to sizzle, but now that the heat is off, Milla grabs the pan by the handle and places it on a cold burner]
T. . . thank you. I-it didn't quite turn out how I envisioned it.
[is Milla flustered? she hardly ever gets flustered]

monday morning-
He can't help but be curious though..! Because he's a young boy that's always hungry, but can't really cook. Fend for himself, yes he can... But cook? No...
He was attracted by the smell until he actually entered the kitchen only to be greeted with the smell of burnt meat. Eww... Doesn't smell good at all... ]
That... Sounds about right...
[ Staaares at the burnt meat. Milla, how bad are you... ] Do you need help?
no subject
I think so.
I'm not certain where I went wrong.
[well she has the heat turned up all the way on high so there you go]
no subject
. . .If it makes you feel better, some people really like burnt food.
[ He's just looking at the oven... He's trying to think..! What would Gardenia do... #WWGD... He points to the knob for the heat. ]
It's really up high... Which means, it'll cook super fast if you don't pay attention I think..?
no subject
Why? Charred food has no palatable taste. It's just burned.
[for how much she sucks at cooking, she at least knows a lot about flavor and taste. her gaze flickers towards the knob to which he's pointing, and she flips down the heat to low]
The recipe did say medium-high heat. I thought that's what I had it on. . .

F-f-fire!! Does anybody need help?!
no subject
It's all right! Nothing is dangerously on fire, but thank you for the concern.
[the only casualty here is that steak]
no subject
[ Noticing the steak. ]
Is that what caught fire?
no subject
[in. a manner of speaking]
I failed to maintain the proper application of heat. As a result, it burned, and is no longer edible.
It's an unfortunate waste of steak.

Milla, you gotta work harder than that if you wanna be a great chef. Not even a coyote would eat that steak!
[ He's... trying to be encouraging, because he's an enthusiast of learning new skills and supports her, but as usual his words come off as insensitive. ]
no subject
I know! It's tragic, isn't it? A waste of a completely good cut of steak. . . I'm almost ashamed.

[and just like that, the fire burns in her eyes! at least it's not the kind of fire that turned the steak into crisp meat]
If I can learn how to use a sword when my abilities are taken away from me, then I can learn how to cook. I'll take this as a challenge, and I have every intention of defeating it!
[dumps the crisp steak into the nearest trash can, places the pan back on the burner, and TURNS UP THE HEAT]
no subject
but.
well.
he also knows the smell of burned meat, because he's made his fair share of mistakes in the kitchen. there's a reason why ignis does the cooking back home. when noct makes his way in, he's looking into the pan and wincing just a little at the carnage.]
I... think you might have overdone it just a bit. [unless shoe leather is what she was going for here.
...what a waste of good garula meat. :(]
no subject
I. . . I think you're right. And it's a shame; with all of these spices, the steak would have been absolutely delectable.
[she looks so sad, Noct. SO SAD]
no subject
[kind... of.]
Aside from, you know. The burnt part.
[you tried, milla, you tried.]
no subject
Does the smell evoke a certain sense of nostalgia from you? If so, I'll at least consider this a partial success.

monday
The fire just not doing it for you?
no subject
. . . unfortunately, it isn't. It's too hot. Far too hot.
no subject
Did you ever think about... using less fire?
no subject
I suppose. . . less fire would be ideal, yes. But I honestly wasn't sure how much heat was needed to properly cook it to the perfect temperature.
[she's a bit flustered, which is a rare sight]
