It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.

... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!

After all, there's nothing wrong with the town today and you might just want to savor it while it lasts.

You're really good at putting your foot in your mouth, aren't you? Like, extraordinarily good.

[She doesn't seem too torn up about it, though, as she fishes another tomato out of the bucket.]

I guess I can let it go if you let me have the next shot.

It seems worse around you, for some reason. [ He's never exactly Mr. Tact, but usually he's not this bad.

He nods, though, tossing his tomato between his hands instead. ]

Go for it. You should probably have the next two.

Right, sure. A likely story.

[Another glance towards him, raising her eyebrows slightly.]

You know I'm going to have to go one at a time, right?

[now she's just fucking with him and i personally am sorry]

[ ARE YOU SASSING HARRY POTTER, NATALIE ]

Well, I mean, you could try kicking one.

[ okay now it's intentional ]

[she is an indiscriminate sasser, everyone gets this treatment]

Probably harder to aim like that. I might actually hit you in the face with one. But, hey, if you're encouraging me...

[ Or the texture. Tomatoes are weird??? ]

So...how are you holding up, though? Honestly?

[She pauses for a moment, as though she's taken aback by the question, before she launches another tomato at the sign. It misses, but it gives her enough time to think of what to say to that. She takes care not to let her tone of voice shift too much.]

Pretty sure nobody is doing great right now.

Yeah, pretty sure. [ His tone does shift, more sober and thoughtful. He doesn't throw his tomato just yet. ]

But I'm asking about you.

[She takes another pause, pulling out another tomato. What a fascinating fruit?? It must be, because she's staring at it pretty hard.]

If I said I was fine, would you even believe me?

Probably not.

[ He punctuates that statement with a tomato splattering against the sign. ]

Sometimes...it just helps to know someone is listening.

[ When it feels like you're drowning in the thoughts in your own head. ]

[She makes it a note to continue to sound nonchalant, but there's something more in her expression, a grimace that she's trying to hold back.

When she throws the tomato this time, it hits right on target.]

If I start talking about it I'm never going to be able to shut up, so. I'm good.

[ His gaze lingers on her for a moment, as if he's trying to crack just what her features are saying that her voice isn't. But he's not a prier, and if she didn't want to talk, he wouldn't push her to.

"Never" is an awfully long time, but we've got a lot of tomatoes. [ A beat as he tosses one of the fruits up and down in his hand. ] If you don't want to talk about that, I could...explain about my, er. Special stick.

[ He hadn't told her yet, but she's more than earned the right to know. ]

Careful, or I'm going to start thinking you're just giving me really bad pick up lines in addition to shoving your foot in your mouth constantly.

But sure, tell me about your special stick, assuming you're talking about the one you were holding the first time we talked.

What? I have loads of great pick up lines. You'd know if I was using them.

[ This is approximately 1000% untrue. ]

Um - yeah, that's the one. [ He draws it out of his pocket. It's still a force of habit to carry it with him at all times. ] It's...a wand, actually. For doing magic. Real magic, not pulling rabbits out of hats.

I feel like that isn't a thing. Scratch that, I know that isn't a thing.

[Her brutal honesty strikes again.]

...You know, it's not the weirdest thing I've seen or heard here, but it's still really weird to hear anyways. What kind of stuff could you do?

All sorts of different things. [ Said matter-of-factly, not like he's trying to brag. ] Charms, transfiguration spells, jinxes, defensive spells...I didn't grow up being able to use it, but now that I can and something's blocking me, it feels like I've lost a part of who I am.

[ She probably knows how that feels, huh. ]

...Yeah. That sucks.

[She thinks, briefly, of countless afternoons filled with nothing but fingers moving over keys and eyes scanning sheets of music. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, sonata and sonata.

This time, when she throws the tomato, she squeezes it so hard that there's some juice on her hand afterwards. She wipes it on her trousers as she focuses on something else.]

What's the difference between a charm and a jinx?

Charms are mainly alteration spells. Making things fly, move on their own, start singing...things like that. Jinxes are more a kind of dark magic, usually set on a person. For instance...making a person's legs give out from under them.

[ Beat. ] I don't use those much, but it's important to know what's out there.

But you do use them sometimes?

[It's lightly curious rather than accusatory.]

Sounds like a good way to get back at someone who's being a dick. Too bad you don't have it here.

You have no idea how how many times I've thought that. Not just for getting back at people being dicks. If I could apparate, we'd be out of here in no time.

So apparating is, like, teleporting?

Well...I might have levitated my best mate in the middle of the night once. Hoisted him right up in the air so he was hanging by his ankle. [ #kanyeshrug ] I didn't actually know what the spell would do.

[ Then he nods as he picks the leaves off a tomato. ]

Essentially, yeah. Popping out of one place and popping in at another. People can go alongside others who can do it, but that's gone just like everything I can do with my wand.

[ bye tomato ]

[She watches as he picks the leaves off, canting her head slightly.]

Sounds pretty useful. How far could you go, or was it not based on distance? Also, what do you have against that tomato?

Not the only time I've used that excuse either.

[ But it's true??? ]

Supposedly it gets harder the farther you go, and there's always the risk of splinching. And it was a sad excuse for a tomato, really.
