It's a rather quaint town when you get down to it. At least, that's what the Sheriff would argue. Warm and dry in the mornings and afternoons with a brisk coolness in the evenings. The perfect type of weather to just sit out on your rocking chair and observe the comings and goings.

... Of course, there's not much in the way of comings and goings when there aren't any actual people here to watch. Nevertheless, don't let that get you down! The town is your oyster and those roosters won't stop crowing until everyone's out of bed. Up and at 'em, rise and shine, it's time to make the day yours!

After all, there's nothing wrong with the town today and you might just want to savor it while it lasts.

Or our good sheriff's employers. Not that it looks like we'll be meeting anyone else not completely involved in this whole thing.

Where do you think his employers are anyway? I still haven't seen anyone new since we got here and it's been a couple of days now. [He doesn't like being unaware, tyvm.]

I don't think they're going to show themselves anytime soon, if at all. There's got to be a way they could watch us without ever appearing.

I know a lot of us talked about hidden cameras and considering he said we're being broadcast that sounds way more likely now. Maybe it's time to start doing that investigation thing.

... So you're starting with the horses?

Yeah. [Like this is totally normal. And since Sara kind of already knows a little about him, he doesn't think it's a big deal.] Back where I'm from I can talk to them, but these guys don't seem interested yet. If anybody knows anything about the town, they'd be a good guess.

[ ... SHE CAN'T EVEN SAY THIS IS WEIRD. ]

Well, if they start dropping hints, let me know. I'll check and see what I can find in the meantime.

You'll be one of the first ones I tell. Where are you going to start?

Probably the hotel. I can't exactly break into all of the rooms, but if someone wanted to watch us, that's as good a place to start as any.

One of the other ideas some people were kicking around is that we might have criminals or monsters hiding in our group. If that's true, the hotel's a great place to start. It's mostly bedrooms anyway isn't it? But they'd need to cover the kitchen and the back and those aren't too big to search thoroughly.

It's a lot easier than exploring a schoolhouse, prooobably.

[ Yep. ]

Okay just how big was this schoolhouse?

... I think it was seven floors? Maybe? Now it's around... more than twelve.

[ It's a special schoolhouse. ]

That sounds more like a castle, Sara. [Uh.] The hotel's probably going to stay three floors tall, right?

Still looked exactly like an old schoolhouse from the outside, though. [ of course it did. ]

But as far as I can tell, yeah. The hotel just seems like a hotel.

What if--[No, shut up, Percy.] We should check there isn't a basement or anything, too. Doesn't seem likely but it would be good to cover all of our bases.

Right, right... I'll check to see if there's anything different about the floor.

[ She's a pro, she's got this. ]

Thanks. [That gives him a little reassurance. The horses seem content to be grazing where they are even if Percy's watching them and rolling an apple between his hands.]

...wonder if we could take them out into the desert to scout further.

Hijacking horses now? [ Now she just sounds amused. ] I guess that's one way to get an answer from them.

It wouldn't be the first time. [Just a grin.] Horses and I kind of have a weird relationship.

[...like literally. He thinks it's probably best not to mention just how (thanks, Dad.)]

It's a family gift. Being able to talk to horses is something I inherited from one side of my family, and it's weird, but you eventually get used to weird stuff like that.

So, just an educated guess here... the seeing monsters thing also comes from the family?

[ ... how on earth are these two things related? Is he a witch? What's a boy witch called, anyway? ]
