[ WEEK ONE – ARRIVAL ]

ARRIVAL

It's a surprisingly quiet ride. The passenger cart is nothing more than wood and a bit of cotton to cushion the seats but for some reason, even as the train hurtles along down the track, the cart remains silent. It only starts filling with noise when the passengers begin to stir. There isn't any indication on how you got here. No grogginess, no injuries -- in fact, those who arrive with injuries might find them healed up completely (of course there are others who won't be so lucky) -- but in one blink and the next, you are here, on this train. Maybe you're even sitting next to a friend. Maybe a stranger. Won't be any time to talk either, the train suddenly slowing down with enough of a jerk to throw its passengers back into their seats. A few seconds later, it comes to a complete stop and with a whistle, the doors open and a voice calls from outside. It's male, with a slight mechanical twang behind it and anyone who looks out the window towards the station can just about spot the portly man out on the platform. "You might as well come on out, folks. You won't be getting any answers on the train." Once everyone is out on the platform, the man stands before them taking an assessing look at each person. There is something very off about him, though he looks human enough -- but his eyes are too white, his skin too dry, and his hair is doesn't shine quite right. He is dressed in a flannel shirt, suspenders, and jeans, a cowboy hat atop his head and a badge pinned to his shirt that reads "Sheriff". After a moment, he gives a gruff nod and speaks again. "Howdy. Real happy to see all of you. Explanations will come... Sunday morning, yeah. Give y'all a bit of time to meet each other. Settle in. Keys are on the table over there, hat and pistol in your room. Don't, er... Don't shoot each other right away but if you do, my office is over there. Go get some dinner, sun's about to set. Wouldn't want any coyote trouble." And that seems to be... it. The Sheriff tips his hat and turns to head to the building with the large "Sheriff" sign on the front. There is a table nearby, keys neatly laid out for everyone with nametags attached to each one. An owl hoots in the distance and a breeze passes through the group. It's quiet again. Welcome to game start! Characters will find their items in their hotel rooms and anyone who goes to visit the Sheriff after he leaves will find the station empty. On top of that, rulebooks will not be available to find until later. The Sheriff might be forcing it a little but it seems like the intent here really is to get everyone to interact with each other. [... Shinnosuke's dearly hoping that he got the wrong room, because a monkey holding a gun was not the first he wanted to see upon locating it, but nope, he's pretty sure this is it.]

Please tell me that your pet isn't going to be a danger to all of us, or more importantly, to me.

[He's just... going to make a move to take the other pistol, thank you... Simon can have the monkey's.]

[ Simon freezes for a second, like someone who, for a completely hypothetical example, didn't realize that Shinnosuke had also entered the room. But he recovers quickly enough, taking the gun from the monkey and holding at arm's length as if it were a piece of trash. ]

Nowaynoway! Money would never hurt anybody, and he doesn't know how to shoot a gun. He just likes shiny things, that's all!

[He'll just be keeping a steady grip on his own gun, as he begins to edge back out of the room. At least the gun's out of the monkey's hands...]

Oh, it's not deliberate firings I'm concerned about.

[CAN THAT MONKEY ACCIDENTALLY FIRE A GUN, that's the worry here.]

... And you named your monkey Money? Really?

No, that was already his name when I started working with him. He's a circus monkey. If I'm being honest, he outranks me a little bit...

[ Still working at arm's length, Simon opens up the chamber to remove any bullets that may be in there before handing the gun back to the monkey. ]

Well, that must say a lot about you.

[Shinnosuke relaxes somewhat when Simon removes the bullets, as he re-enters the room (but why give the gun back to the monkey??).]

I don't mind working my way up from the bottom. I'm pretty new at animal training.

[ Happy monkey day!! Money goes back to brandishing his weapon, his tiny simian heart bursting with glee. ]

... That isn't even remotely reassuring to hear, you know?

[He knows the gun is (maybe) harmless now, but he can't be completely at ease when the monkey has a gun in its hands...]

It's okay. He doesn't bite or anything like that, so I just let him do what he likes. He'll tire himself out pretty soon.

[ Simon sits down and takes off his pointy purple shoes. ]

Then let's just hope that he doesn't learn how to load a gun, or I'm kicking him out of the room. [...] As I assume that we are roommates, and you're not just some random guy looting this place.

[Not that Shinnosuke planned on spending any more time in the hotel than necessary, so really, Simon and his totally-not-deadly monkey are free to hog the room, but.]

Nowaynoway, he won't figure that out. And if I try to keep it from him he'll just become obsessed with it...

[ Making a mental note to get a shiny coin or something to give to Money later. The last thing anyone needs is a gun-crazy monkey, because really that little simian felon probably could figure out how to fire a gun. ]

Oh my gosh, I'm being so rude! If we're roommates, I should introduce myself! My name is Simon.

[Since Shinnosuke happens to see his cellphone lying around (what's his phone doing in this place?), he'll walk over to grab that, let Money try to take that too.]

... Shinnosuke. I'd say it's nice to meet you, but I hate the idea of roommates, so don't worry, you can think of it as having the room to yourself.

[court_chesster]

[ Cocks his head to he side. ]

Hm? Where are you going to go?

[insincerely]

I'll figure something out.

[aka he has no idea/may or may not end up crawling back to the room anyway, but gotta be a jerk and make it clear he wants nothing to do with anyone!! It's the principle of the matter.]

[court_chesster]

Okay. Come back if you have any trouble, okay? I don't want to have to worry about you.

[ The monkey grows bored and tosses the gun onto the floor before flopping onto the bed beside him. Simon pats it on the head and nudges the gun under the bed with his foot. ]

There! All safe now.

[insincerely]

[He shoots the monkey a wary glance, before he smiles back at Simon in a not entirely friendly way.]

Please don't worry about me. I hardly need it, and the notion is rather stifling.

[ If Simon notices the unfriendliness, he sure doesn't show it. ]

I'm sorry. I don't mean to be stifling. We're just... all in this together, you know?

[insincerely]

I don't know, actually. I'm not about to trust some stranger, and you shouldn't either.

[Sorry, Simon. At least it's nothing personal!]

Oh. I guess that makes sense...

[ Looks a little sad about it, though. ]

I just feel like, if whoever took us managed to kidnap everybody so easily, it might take a group effort to escape? M-maybe?

[Unfortunately, that sad look has absolutely zero effect on Shinnosuke.]

Probably. But in a "group effort", we're also all liable to backstab and desert one another.

Erm... I guess so, yeah, but if we probably can't escape by ourselves, and we can't count on each other to escape together, isn't that basically just putting our trust in the kidnapper?

[ The monkey whines at Simon, and Simon tucks it into bed. ]

Well, you can think like that if you want. I just don't trust anyone but myself. Oh, and money, but I suppose that's not relevant here.

I dunno, trusting Money is pretty relevant. I trust him too! Unless you mean, like... trusting him not to borrow things from people.

While I would be thrilled if you could pay me, I figured as much. Just keep your monkey to yourself and make sure he doesn't touch my stuff.
