[ WEEK ONE – ARRIVAL ]

ARRIVAL

It's a surprisingly quiet ride. The passenger cart is nothing more than wood and a bit of cotton to cushion the seats but for some reason, even as the train hurtles along down the track, the cart remains silent. It only starts filling with noise when the passengers begin to stir.

There isn't any indication on how you got here. No grogginess, no injuries -- in fact, those who arrive with injuries might find them healed up completely (of course there are others who won't be so lucky) -- but in one blink and the next, you are here, on this train. Maybe you're even sitting next to a friend. Maybe a stranger.

Won't be any time to talk either, the train suddenly slowing down with enough of a jerk to throw its passengers back into their seats. A few seconds later, it comes to a complete stop and with a whistle, the doors open and a voice calls from outside. It's male, with a slight mechanical twang behind it and anyone who looks out the window towards the station can just about spot the portly man out on the platform.

"You might as well come on out, folks. You won't be getting any answers on the train."

Once everyone is out on the platform, the man stands before them taking an assessing look at each person. There is something very off about him, though he looks human enough -- but his eyes are too white, his skin too dry, and his hair is doesn't shine quite right. He is dressed in a flannel shirt, suspenders, and jeans, a cowboy hat atop his head and a badge pinned to his shirt that reads "Sheriff". After a moment, he gives a gruff nod and speaks again.

"Howdy. Real happy to see all of you. Explanations will come... Sunday morning, yeah. Give y'all a bit of time to meet each other. Settle in. Keys are on the table over there, hat and pistol in your room. Don't, er... Don't shoot each other right away but if you do, my office is over there. Go get some dinner, sun's about to set. Wouldn't want any coyote trouble."

And that seems to be... it. The Sheriff tips his hat and turns to head to the building with the large "Sheriff" sign on the front. There is a table nearby, keys neatly laid out for everyone with nametags attached to each one. An owl hoots in the distance and a breeze passes through the group. It's quiet again.

Welcome to game start! Characters will find their items in their hotel rooms and anyone who goes to visit the Sheriff after he leaves will find the station empty. On top of that, rulebooks will not be available to find until later. The Sheriff might be forcing it a little but it seems like the intent here really is to get everyone to interact with each other. Pressing flowers...?

[ Now he's curious! He knows how to arrange fresh ones sorta, not squish em flat. ]

Can you show me how?
cherrypuncher: (i will turn these tables 'round)

[personal profile] cherrypuncher 2017-01-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! [And she springs up from the chair, dropping a few flowers in the process. Other than being a little sweaty still, she's recovered impressively quickly from her sprint.] Will you come to the store with me? We need some books and some paper!
sunnashi: (small delights)

[personal profile] sunnashi 2017-01-15 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Of course!

[ Here's hoping at least 2/3 of Yuna's flower population remains intact by the time they reach there, but off they go! He'll be right behind her to pick up the big ones that come loose.

Humans are really good at bouncing back. ]
cherrypuncher: (you will float above)

[It's getting up and getting down that's a problem, but she's mostly doing okay while she's just walking. She's a little slow-going, though; even if she isn't anywhere near risking collapsing now, she's still tired out from that sprint. Every single time he picks up a flower without fail, she thanks him.

Once they get to the store she sort of has to nudge the door open with her shoulder, but she's looking as excited as ever.
]

I was looking for an iron before, but I couldn't find one anywhere... So instead we need the biggest book we can find, and some paper!
sunnashi: (relaxed)

[ Take your time, Yuna. Higekiri has all the patience! After this slower lesson though, maybe be they can rest. He'll hold the door open with his free hand so she can set down her flowers for this little project. ]

Understood. I think there might be books behind the counter, and paper too.

[ For cataloging inventory and letter writing, respectively. But for now, pressing, a much better purpose. ]
cherrypuncher: (in a past life?)

[personal profile] cherrypuncher 2017-01-16 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yuna thanks him when he opens the door, too, because she's a good bean. The flowers get set gingerly down on the counter and Yuna scampers over to the other side, hefting the book onto the counter and examining the paper with the most serious stare she can muster before nodding in approval. She makes a big display of opening the book, laying it flat in front of her, and caaaarefully lining the page with a sheet of paper.]

Okay! I need you to pick one of your favorite flowers. [She gestures towards her pile.] And set it here. [She taps the page she's opened to.]
sunnashi: (he swears he was good)

[personal profile] sunnashi 2017-01-17 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ She's having fun with this, he can tell that much. While she was setting up, he sat on the edge of the counter, watching her steps carefully. ]

How about this one?

[ He sets a yellow flower on the page she pointed to. It seems easy to press, with nice, flat petals in a circle. ]
cherrypuncher: (june was a test)

[personal profile] cherrypuncher 2017-01-17 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, good choice!

[And since Yuna knows things about flowers and won't shut up about things she knows about flowers and it is the first yellow flower on this list o' flower shit i've just haD TO SAVE BECAUSE OF THIS:] Did you know daisies like this are symbols of innocence and cheerfulness?

[With that same slow deliberateness, she sets another sheet of paper over the chosen flower, nods, then slams the book shut.]

Step one done!

[She pushes the book and her papers towards Higekiri.]

If you use a different part of the book, you can have more than one pressing at a time. You try setting one up!
sunnashi: (relaxed)

Oh, that's very cute! It's appropriate with how they look.

[ Okay, time to follow Yuna's steps. Book, paper, flower... Flower trivia that some should be appreciated for their efforts in saving it? Sure let's roll with it. He knows some, nobles like flowers. So did Kasen, who likes being refined. ]

White poppies mean "rejoice", according to a comrade who was into nature for his poetry. I guess you would give them as congratulations. Red ones had another meaning, but it was happy.

[ Alright, so he's got his spot in the book, flower sandwiched between two sheets, and book slam, like it's a terrible book. Honestly it might as well be, too many numbers. His paper isn't laid out quite as neatly and a corner sticks out from the pages, but the flower is in there! ]
cherrypuncher: (for sure this pain will surely pass)

[personal profile] cherrypuncher 2017-01-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yuna watches Higekiri perform each step with all the intensity she can muster, even though genuine enthusiasm wastes no time replacing it when the subject of flower language comes up.]

It's so cool how colors are enough to change the whole meaning of the same flower!

[And when the book slams shut she applauds, beaming.]

You did it! [She picks the book up and holds it out to him.] Find a safe place for this. Put some other heavy things on top of it, and every few days, open it up and replace the papers. It takes a couple of weeks for the flowers to finish drying up, but that's all it takes to press them!
